The Virgin and Child with Two Angels, c.1490 by Sandro Botticelli (c) Gemäldegalerie der Bildenden Künste Vienna
Botticelli was largely forgotten for more than 300 years until his work was progressively rediscovered in the 19th century. He is now recognized as one of the greatest artists of all time. His celebrated images are firmly embedded in the public consciousness and his influence permeates art, design, fashion and film.
Botticelli Reimagined will be divided into three major sections, entitled: Global, Modern, Contemporary; Rediscovery and Botticelli in his own Time. The famous “Birth of Venus” is the international symbol of how Botticelli’s imagery has attained its present level of acclaim while it cannot leave its permanent display in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This work is depicting the naked Venus with her flowing hair. She is emerging from a shell on the seashore and her so familiar pose has fascinated generations of artists and designers.
The freshness and richness of the genius of Botticelli is a permanent source of inspiration for our modern civilization and his images can be imagined and reimagined forever and ever.
