In 1884, in Paris, he met George Seurat but it was not until 1891, when he died, that he joined the movement of «neo» adopting the technique of the division of colors.
From that moment, he settled in the South and began to exchange a rich correspondence with his friends Paul Signac, Maximilian Luce, Charles Angrand and Theo Van Rysselberghe.
They keep him regularly informed of artistic events and send him books and catalogs of exhibitions.
Signac moved to the south, and as early as 1892, they combined Seu- rat’s technique with the study of color rather than light. From 1895, they give up the small points to favor the wider keys with contrasting colors of stronger and stronger.
Cross loves to celebrate the bucolic harmony of man and exuberant nature in a very Nietzschean vitalism. His international success, at that time, will make him meet in his retirement from St. Clair the future wild beasts, Henri Matisse and Henri Manguin with whom he builds bonds of friendship.
Considered alongside Paul Signac as one of the fathers of modernity, his works today are highly acclaimed by foreign collectors especially in Germany but also in Belgium and Holland.
Cross has never tired of the purity of the colors of deserted beaches. Fascinated by the elegance of the pines coming out of the sand facing the delights of the half-moon shores, these enchanting scenery fed his art into a dreamed happiness.
