A MAN ON THE MOVE
On October 10, 1901 Alberto Giacometti was born in Borgonovo, in the Swiss mountains of the Engadine. His father, Giovanni, is an Impressionist painter and printmaker - Swiss Symbolist and his godfather is none other than the Swiss artist Cuno Amiet.
His first portrait carved in 1915 will be that of his elder brother Diego. Before joining the School of Fine Arts and the School of Arts and Crafts of Geneva, he will study at the Protestant College of Schiers where he will make painted or sculpted portraits of his comrades like Simon Bérard. He will make many trips to Italy before coming to Paris to study sculpture including Bourdelle. In 1926 he moved to the studio at the 46 rue Hippolyte-Maindron where he remained until his death on January 11, 1966.
