Born in Nyack, New York, Hopper began his career by training as an illustrator before studying painting at the New York School of Art until 1906. Passionate about German, French and Russian literature, the young artist found his bearings key to painters such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet.
A virtuoso of light and shade, Hopper particularly likes to work in oil painting which offers him a palette of colors in all its intensity and depth. His very personal aesthetic has strongly influenced painting of course, but also popular culture, photography and cinema.
