His famous painting «Quiet evening on the beach of Skagen, Sønderstrand» (1893) depicts Marie with her friend Anna. The two women are strolling at the blue hour on the beach in the middle of summer.
The blond hues and shades of azure form a real pictorial poem, an invitation to reverie.
For this work, nothing was left to chance, Krøyer took many pictures to prepare his subject. He then let his nature as a painter transform the real colors to get closer to symbolism than naturalism. Thus, the black ribbon became golden yellow, borrowing its light from the splendid star. As for the blues, they triumph in this melancholy proper to the end of the day which touches him in the depths of his soul.
So much so that in spite of the blindness that struck him ten years before the end of his life, he could continue to paint so much light radiated in his being.
