Between January 16, 1938 and November 7, 1939, Picasso devoted to his daughter no less than fourteen painted portraits. This series is “the most im- pressive dedicated to a single child” as art historian Werner Spies points out. It stands out from any academism, allows us to understand Picasso’s psychological description of his daughter and reflects the artist’s qualities as a portrait painter.
“With his eyes he looked. With his hands he drew or modeled. With his skin, his nostrils, his heart, his mind, his very guts he felt what we were, what we were hiding, our being. This is, I think, why he was able to understand the human being, however young, with such truth.
