The Musée d’Orsay, Paris, is organizing with the MUNCH- Museet, Oslo, an exhibition in an exceptional partnership.
Edvard Munch often sees his fame limited to a single image, that of his work «The Scream». This crystallization of the public’s attention on this single iconic painting erases the extent of his artistic production that this event aims to reveal by exploring the artist’s itinerary in the com- plexity of his sixty years of creation.
Nearly a hundred works are exhibited, including around forty major paintings and a very important set of drawings and prints.
The artistic modernity of Munch’s work has its roots in the 19th cen- tury to fully fit into the 20th century. His singular vision of the world and his powerful symbolist dimension permeate all his paintings with great artistic coherence. The principle of the cycle is at the center of his thought and his art. He emphasizes this himself by speaking of his «Frise de Vie» which integrates his paintings into a whole.
This notion intervenes at several levels in Munch’s work and is an essen- tial tool for the overall understanding of his painting.
