Anon-conformist woman, painter, writer, artist with a thou- sand facets, Yayoi Kusama was born in Japan in 1929 into a wealthy and traditional family who had decided on her role in society.
Since childhood, she was haunted by auditory and visual hallucina- tions. Since the 1970s, she has chosen to lock herself in a psychiatric hospital. She has a workshop and works every day with assistants within the medical infrastructure.
Pumpkins and big polka dots have always been in her mind. She decides to devote herself to her art despite the severity of her family and the moral attacks she has experienced since her youth. Thanks to the support of George O’Keeffe, she left Japan for Seattle then to New York.
Her art did not find its audience and she returned to Japan. It was only later that her immersive installations brought her international success.
