Art, history and politics intertwine in the exhibition that the Gam, Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Turin devotes to the romantic genius of Francesco Hayez (1791- 1882).
This unique tour brings together in 10 chronological sections around a hundred drawings and paintings by the Italian artist from private and public collections.
The visit begins with his first years of training between Venice and Rome where he was able to benefit from the friendship of Canova, arriving at the last moments of his career in Milan. Part of the exhibition is devoted to the drawings for the work “The Thirst of the First Cruises”, undoubtedly the most com- mitted, designed for the Royal Palace of Turin where it can still be admired.
A civil painter, faithful to the values of the Italian Risorgimento, Hayez witnessed the changes of times and mentalities in Italy thanks to his exceptional longevity, having lived for almost a century.
