On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of his birth, Brussels organized this spring a major tribute to Jean Michel Folon (1934-2005). Three exhibitions and a walk offer a wonderful opportunity to discover the talent of this incredible Belgian artist.
During his prolific career, he was interested in watercolor, sculpture, ceramics, engraving and even tapestry. His works often remain unknown beyond the pos- ters and magazine covers which have given him great notoriety thanks to his unique style.
“Folon in the City”, until May 31, 2024, presented all the themes of Folon in the center of the city with around twenty sculptures exhibited in the most emblema- tic places of the Belgian capital such as the Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert , Mont des Arts, Place Royale and Square du Petit Sablon. His bronze suitcase embodies this dimension of travel so dear to the artist, just like his flight, the cat, mad love or the bird.
The “Magritte – Folon” exhibition, until July 21, 2024, at the Magritte Museum also celebrates 100 years of Surrealism by imagining a dialogue between the two artists who never met but who have very strong cultural ties. The discovery of young Folon, aged 20, of Magritte’s mural series “Le Domaine enchanté” for the Knokke Casino will be a true revelation and a perpetual source of inspiration.
