GRAND PALAIS PARIS
MAPPLETHORPE FLESH
OF NAKED SOUL
Robert Mapplethorpe, grand master of art photography in black and white, embodies a sultry time of sexual liberation, which a plague came to obscure with its deadly shadow.
His last self-portrait represents him leaning on his cane with a skull fixing the camera objective, with a look of being an accomplice to his own fate held in his hand.
In striking contrast, his self-portrait taken eight years before shows him dressed like a sophisticated woman with a provocative look and a light scent of irony floating on his rouged lips.
