Five years later, he moved to London, but kept a team of collaborators
in Barcelona and continued to manufacture his personal pieces in his workshop near Treviso. The Groninger Museum has dedicated an exhibition to his artwork. His giant chess game, «The Tournament», recreates the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805
that pitted the English fleet against that of France and Spain. This true symbol of the clash of cultures was installed in London for the design of the Festival of the city in 2009, in Trafalgar Square, of course.
His inspiration is multiple, hybrid and without limit. From cactus to the pig, f rom architecture of ancient Rome to the Danish creations of Arne Jacobsen, Jaime Hayón juggles with materials and ideas.
His collection, «Paola C» was inspired by the dishes of the Roman Empire
that he metamorphoses into a contemporary minimalism in a contrast
of different textures. Thus, «Colosseum» is a wide flat dish whose base looks like
the architecture of the famous amphitheater in Rome. The only object without support,
«Augustus», is a large silver plated pitcher wearing a funny smile.
Surfing the wave of his dreams, he created very functional pieces for the Danish brand Fritz Hansen or an army of «Hope Birds’ for the Italian «Design-Apart», fifteen penguins standing at attention
in a limited edition made by the ceramist Bosa.
