Gustave Caillebotte was often underestimated and considered rather as an amateur painter and a patron of his artist friends. His works dedicated to the Paris of Haussmann, permanent construc- tion in progress that he observed from a window or balcony, are yet amazing, like his portraits of the craftsmen or of house painters.
The exhibition at Giverny focuses on the passion that Caillebotte shared with Claude Monet for horticulture. A hundred works depict the nature, the garden of his family home in Yerres and then the one at the Petit Gennevilliers. Very innovative, his paintings of daisies are repeated endlessly to create their own pace. At the end of his life, he will start without being able to finish it, a work representing the boats along the Seine, a prelude to his final journey...
