When Douglas Kirkland met Marilyn Monroe for the very first time,
he was very young, 27 years old on his passport and 17 in his mind. He was coming from a small Canadian town and even so he was already working for “LOOK” magazine.
Marilyn Monroe was already a superstar in 1961 but with a difficult past.
She had a terrible childhood; she got married to start with, to be free at 17 and got divorced soon after. She was working in a factory and every Saturday night she was going to the theater. She was sitting alone at the back and whenever the movie was good that would make her week more acceptable. During that time, Norma Jean Baker started to create Marilyn Monroe. At their first appointment at her place, Douglas was surprised as her apartment looked like a deluxe hotel room. As a person, Marilyn was warm, very caring. “LOOK» magazine agreed with her agent to make a special edition with her for their 25th anniversary. Douglas was with two colleagues, older than him. There were not enough chairs and as Marilyn and he stood, they looked like kids in the middle of the room with the others on the chairs like school teachers, Marilyn said to Douglas to sit with her on the bed. It was just like a sign of their story…The men asked her,
“How do you want to be remembered?”
